365 DAYS PAST THE TRAFFIC LIGHTS

How do you cope with the death of a parent at 24 years old?
The time when you’re somewhere between independence and reliance on parents, figuring out who you are and what you want to do, trying to maintain friendships and a social life when your world is crumbling around you and no one understands.
In late 2017 I was hurtled into a new realm, one that was immersed in medical settings and which put everything else on hold.
This was suddenly my life.

This memoir explores the first 365 days following the death of my father. I write frankly about the moment of diagnosis, the experience of becoming a carer for a parent and shed light on the psychological and physical symptoms of bereavement.

The book takes the reader between London, Atlanta and Los Angeles weaving together the experience of grieving and a narrative of reconciling memory and loss.

In 2018 I lost my father to cancer less than 2 months after he was diagnosed.
I was 24 and at the time found very little literature or support aimed specifically at young adults, with most aimed at children, or to people who have lost spouses. After a year of living with my grief, feeling isolated while battling societal expectations that come with being in your twenties and living in London, I decided to write the book I desperately needed at the time, in the hope it will help others.
It is part self-help and part memoir, structured so the reader can dip in and out and written so both those grieving and their support network can benefit from it.
Ultimately, I offer a voice for grieving young adults, with the aim of showing them they are not alone.
